We are already in the second month of 2016, and if you are like most people, you’ve probably set a list of goals you want to accomplish this year. Over the past few years, I have learned that it is not what happens to us that matters, but what we do about it that truly produces happiness.
Life happens to us all. With the way of the fast paced world today, it seems like one thing after the next. We are forced to make decisions quickly and have more distractions today than anytime before us. We are quick to blame others for our faults, and try to change things that we often can not change. But what if we took another outlook on life? What if we start making changes within the same set of circumstances that we know we cannot change? Do you think things will begin to change around you once you have a different outlook on life?
Last week we had our first baby, and while I expected life to be a little crazy in the beginning, there was truly no preparing for the sleepless nights, diaper change after diaper change, and all of the crying. With all of the things that I have experienced in my life, I can honestly say that this is the toughest but most incredible change once can encounter.
1) Be Part of Something Bigger
In his book Start With Why, Simon Sinek talks about having a meaning behind your life and finding your true purpose. Why would you think this is important? Research has shown that people who live their life with a purpose live a more meaningful and happier life. In addition, not to mention experiencing less stress and anxiety throughout life.
2) Appreciate the World Around You
This one hits home for us since Melina was born last week. There is more to life than you may think, and once you can open up your mind and realize the little things in life matter, good things will come. I’ve been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq as well as some 3rd world countries that always make me appreciate the smaller things in life. If you can learn to appreciate the things we take for granted everyday like having a job, running water, and a roof to live under, you can learn to live each day in the moment instead of dwelling on the past worrying about what comes next.
You only have one life to live, so you should start treating your body with care. One of Shawna’s favorite quotes is “treat your body like it belongs to someone you love.” Would you be happy if an important person in your life was treating your body the way that you treat yours? Engaging in physical activity everyday makes us more connected with our minds and allows us to be happier. Exercise has shown to reduce depression and increase sex drive. The American Heart Association recommends just 150 minutes a week for moderate aerobic activity and 75 minutes of vigorous activity. Get out there and start taking care of your body.
4) Eat Real Foods
What is real food exactly? We consider real food: whole, unprocessed, unrefined food. Processed and refined foods may contain chemicals, which can slow your body down, and make you feel like crap. Embrace real food and feel your energy change. Some of our tips for eating real foods are: eat fruits and vegetables, stick with lean, quality meats, preferably grass fed when possible, eat fewer packaged foods, and drink lots of water! These simple changes can make all the difference in living a happier, healthier lifestyle, not to mention much more energy!
5) Get Better Every Day
Learning new things affects our wellbeing. Finding ways to get better everyday exposes us to new ideas and helps us stay engaged and curious throughout life. When you find out ways to improve your life, you also get a boost of self-confidence. Why wait to learn something new? Start today and your mind and body will thank you later on.
